Frequently asked questions about the artist

What do you hope viewers take away from your art?

I hope to convey that there is not such thing as “understanding art”. Being an expert isn't necessary to say, "I like this piece" or "I don't like this one." It's not an exam with a fixed solution; rather, it's an invitation to explore your own taste, feelings, and imagination. It's like cloud-watching - what you see is unique to you. Just as nobody can reproduce the exact images I create, not even myself, as each work captures a fleeting moment in time, gone forever.

What inspired you to become an artist?

When I was still living in Russia, I was convinced I’d become an author one day. However, being an immigrant and adapting to a new language shifted my focus from spoken language to visual art. I even considered studying art. But, with no artists in the family and no role models, I abandoned the idea and pursued a career in design. Then, during the early weeks of the pandemic, I stumbled upon #the100dayproject and decided to paint a small piece daily with the limited paints and brushes I had at home. It quickly became a huge passion and a source of endless happiness, and I haven't stopped painting since.

How did you develop your unique artistic style?

With each painting, I have an inner sense of when it's "good," so I follow that instinct. Sometimes, I have to let a painting be, even if it hasn't reached perfection in my eyes; I leave it as a snapshot of an emotional state that has passed and move on to the next piece. Also, when I paint I image dancing with my hand on paper, and most of my recent works have a lively, 'dancy' quality to them.

Are you self-taught or did you receive formal training?

I don't have an art or design degree, but rather a combination of individual art classes in school, extracurricular activities, online courses, and extensive practice. From the start, I viewed each artwork as a step towards mastering my craft. My goal is to create 1000 works to reach the level I aspire to.

What other interests or passions do you have besides art?

So many haha! I love to learn and experiment with new things. I enjoy singing and playing the piano, guitar, and bass. I'm passionate about yoga, photography, cooking, traveling, dancing, and pottery. I also take pleasure in creating unique second-hand outfits and playing board games.

What other interests or passions do you have besides art?

I go through different phases where one aspect of life takes the lead, and others have to take a back seat. At times, I focus solely on painting and reduce other activities as much as possible. In 2020, I created over 250 standalone paintings and filled several sketchbooks in just 8 months. Currently, raising a child is my top priority, and I only produce a few paintings each month. However, these pieces are of high quality, and the effort I invested years ago continues to pay off.
